colorful Southern garden party wedding | Mackensey Alexander Photography & YOJ Events

I love a good Southern wedding, and if it is in Charleston (my favorite Southern town) then even better.  Today’s wedding is a destination wedding in Charleston for a Toronto couple who got engaged there and say it as the perfect place for their wedding.  Their colorful Southern garden party wedding tells me they were right.

Advice for those planning a destination wedding?  Having no ties in South Carolina it was a big challenge to plan from a distance. We used Wedding Mapper as a resource, and it hosted our detailed wedding website.  If it’s a destination wedding and you have a life outside of planning your wedding – get a planner! And trust your gut – I made some big choices just on a feeling I got from the vendors’ websites.

We got engaged in Charleston while on a road trip. We fell in love with the food and the romance of the city. With families from different sides of Canada, no matter where we had our wedding it would be a destination wedding for most of our guests.  We wanted to be somewhere that meant something to us, had great food and history, was a navigable size, was sunny in the fall but wasn’t a tropical resort. Charleston was a city that most of our guests had some notion of but never been, and we were thrilled to introduce our family to it.

We used images of Civil War Generals from the North and South on the outside of the escort cards, but on the inside used our writing to include some historical humour with 80 unique and original “quotes” from those Generals on every card for the guests.

The florals, those fantastic colorful hanging lanterns, the touches of vintage & DIY … there is so much lovely in this wedding.  I also love the tips the bride shares for planning a destination wedding and how this particular couple made their wedding them in a location that meant something to them but that is totally different from where they are from.  This wedding shows you that you can be from Toronto but have your dream Southern Jewish wedding with all of your favorite details and touches included, AND have it look cohesive and feel authentic.  Congrats to Chelsea & Jeff!  Oh, and the bride took a lot of time to talk about each of her vendors, so while I usually just list the vendors and their websites, I’m including Chelsea’s full discussion below.  So for any of you planning a Charleston wedding, take note!
