Vow Renewal in Big Sur from Laura Hernandez Photography | Oh Lovely Day

Today’s feature is more about the marriage than the wedding. That’s not to say that the feature isn’t lovely – because it is! A sweet couple re-exchanging their vows in beautiful Big Sur, California – what’s not to love? But what’s even lovelier is that this couple has been married for 15 years and has 5 children! They are freaking rock stars in my book, as I know that 4 years and one child can be tough at times. So when I saw these moving images by Laura Hernandez of their vow renewal, I knew I had to share. It’s great inspiration for a small intimate elopement, a vow renewal, and a marriage.

From Nancy & Todd: We have known for several years that we wanted to renew our vows.  We actually didn’t get to say the traditional “for better or worse” vows during our original ceremony, still felt very married but they were accidentally left out.  We also live a very busy life together (with our five children, four boys and a girl ages 12, 10, 9, 7, and 5) and we knew someday it would be the right time to leave everything behind and take the time for ourselves, say the things we wanted to say, and refresh our hearts and covenant.

We can thank Pinterest for helping us pick our gorgeous location. Todd and I both said that we wanted to go somewhere we had never been before and once I saw pictures of how lovely Big Sur was and the landscape of Pfeiffer Beach I just couldn’t picture us going anywhere else. I twisted Todd’s arm just a bit and the planning began. Our photographer Laura was incredibly gracious and helped a bunch by answering all of my questions! She made planning our renewal from 2,500 miles away, in a place we had never been to, a piece of cake. Her sweet personality and go with the flow awesomeness was just what we needed.

Nancy carried a bouquet with a photo of their five kids tied to it. Such a sweet way to have your kids with you, while getting away to be alone for your romantic vow renewal.

After 15 years of being married and celebrating the arrival of five children what advice do we have…hmmm, first and foremost, we remember that our marriage is a covenant with God that supersedes all else because having faith makes sense when the rest of the world just sucks and there WILL be days.  The second is don’t ever stop dating, even after you have kids, even after you have a BUNCH of kids, make your marriage and spending time together alone a priority.  And then have fun, forgive quickly, be kind with your words, and laugh lots.

Doesn’t this make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? It definitely has me in a lovey dovey mood. Because really, this is what a wedding is all about. The details are pretty, the dating, engagement, and newlywed phases are fun and romantic, but the marriage is made up of everything else. It isn’t always easy or fun or pretty. But at the end of the day, you have each other. And if you can still feel the love and sentiment that you felt on the day you got married then you are doing something right. Congrats to Nancy and Todd.

If you like vow renewals, you don’t want to miss this Mexican Folk Art-inspired renewal, planned as a surprise from a husband for his wife.

    • Sharing a sneak peek into #babyfredrickpartdeux's finished nursery on the blog today and celebrating with a @luluandgeorgia giveaway (they made that beautiful rug in the room). (Link in profile) Full room tour post with sources to follow after baby is born but I did tag a few sources in the photo.
A good friend shares dessert with you. A great friend knows you're 37 weeks pregnant but that it's too hot for you to turn your oven on so she bakes for you to make you feel better. You're the best @kimberjo13 and you make a mean peach cobbler.
