Preppy Southern Wedding | Dana Laymon Photography

Sorry for the lack of posts this week – I’ve been bedridden with a terrible virus that completely wiped me out (stomach virus on top of being pregnant is brutal!) So to make up for it, I’ve got a fabulous real wedding for you today. I love all of the hints of the South in this wedding, but the pineapples most of all – for those of you that don’t know, the pineapple is a traditional expression of “welcome” throughout the South. Pretty perfect for a wedding, don’t you think?

I was born and raised in Wilmington, NC, a sweet little city nestled between the beach and a historic riverfront. The coastal beauty and southern charm of my hometown inspired so many of our wedding details. We also had a blend of casual elements with more traditional details. Our Catholic ceremony took place in the old, gorgeous, ornate church I grew up attending. Our reception was overlooking the Cape Fear River, where I had shared many lunches with my family on the dock and, years later, where Jordan and I had shared many post-date walks. I loved being able to share these important places with my friends and family!

I absolutely loved walking in to the reception and seeing our families and dearest friends gathered around and welcoming us. It was breathtaking to realize that so many people came to celebrate with us! A close second favorite moment of the day: seeing my students all dressed up for the ceremony. I’m a Pre-K teacher, and I just had to have my wonderful students there with me to celebrate. We even had a special round of applause for them at the end of the Mass for making it all the way through!

Advice for couples planning now? I would suggest going with your instincts instead of what you think other people want. I had a lot of people raise an eyebrow over things like my color choices. It bothered me at first, because I always want everyone to be happy! Once I realized that the best option was to just stop hemming and hawing and make a decision, it was a lot easier for everyone involved. Also, Pinterest was absolutely essential. It is such a wonderful planning tool!

    What made your wedding YOU?

Our wedding was Southern, traditional, easygoing, welcoming, and full of love!

Personally, I love this bride’s color choices and preppy Southern style. Another favorite: including the place and things that are meaningful to the couple. That’s how you make your wedding YOU. Congrats to Kelly & Jordan!

Thank you so much for this feature. We had a blast working with this lovely couple and team if vendors. It was one of our first full “travel boxes” and your inclusion of it on your blog confirms it’s usefulness and viability for brides who have their own style and simply need us vendors to make it their reality for their big day! Xo

    • 19 years ago today, I went on my very first date with this stud. Subway sandwiches, a picnic at the park, a walk in the woods, and ice cream cones. I wore cut off jean shorts and rocked a 90's spiral perm and he wore socks with sandals. Just over 14 years (and quite a few "breaks") later, we got married. Now we're about to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and the birth of our second son. Life is crazy cool. Happy first date anniversary to my just as hot, social media-less, baby daddy and husband. Even though my hormones indicate otherwise lately, I love you so much and am so lucky to do this thing called life with you. ❤️
Came home to the best surprise ever (my favorite pizza ever) courtesy of the best momma ever. In a couple days it will be 10 years since I moved from Chicago to LA and in all of that time I have never ordered one of these to be shipped to me, even though I wanted to a million times. And I haven't been to Chicago for 3 years (which is way too long to be apart!) so I'm really really excited to dig in to this beauty. Where my Giordannos lovers at?
