baby's first foods | Oh Lovely Day

Now that Calvin has entered the world of solid foods (and seriously, how did we get here so fast!?) I’m rediscovering what it is like to make baby food and fit another feeding into the day. And the mess — Calvin is the messiest eater because he mostly insists on feeding himself. But it’s easier the second time around too. I have tried and true feeding tools that I love, favorite foods that I enjoy making him, and we are just having fun with it. So I thought I would share some of Calvin’s first foods with you.

First up was mashed banana. I pureéd a little and mashed a little and he much preferred mashed. After a few bites he tried to take the infant spoon away from me and feed himself.

Next up, mashed avocado! This one is his favorite and works out well since we always have avocados on hand. The downside to avocado is the mess that starts out a pale green or yellow later turns a dark brown, much like an avocado does after much contact with air. So basically choosing the white chair pad (with white straps) was a bad idea (what was I thinking!?) Live and learn. But my Munchkin stay put suction bowls help minimize my mess because they have suction on the bottom, making it impossible for Calvin to grab and toss or spill his food. And he definitely tries. And if you serve your baby food right after making it and want to be sure the food isn’t too hot, they have a great set of bowls and spoons that change color and alert you if food is too hot to feed your baby.

Another favorite has been sweet potatoes. I pureé them and add a little bit of organic brown rice cereal or oatmeal to thicken the way Calvin likes it. I also do butternut squash this way. I make that too, but I buy the organic pre-chopped stuff from Trader Joes, because it is just as good and saves a ton of time. In fact, I often use frozen organic fruits or veggies and then steam and pureé those to make life easier.

And Calvin loves to feed himself with the Munchkin fresh food feeder. I actually put frozen banana in it so he could both feed himself and soothe his teething gums at the same time. He loved it!

Pureéd carrots were not as loved as the other foods, but he definitely had the most fun making a mess with it. That’s why a good bib is so key and the one pictured above is my favorite because it is both long and wide, has a pouch to catch falling messes, and it has an on-the-go storage pouch to keep a food pouch and spoon contained for meals when you’re out and about. You can find it here.

So far, Calvin is a good eater that pretty much tries anything I put in front of him. I hope he stays that way! Stay tuned for more fun feeding posts, including some healthy foods my picky eater Charlie has been trying — all because he likes them divided out on these cute plates! Mom tricks 😉
