{Real Wedding} Jolene & Justin: Modern Rustic Condor’s Nest Ranch Wedding

modern rustic Condor's Nest Ranch Wedding | Green Ribbon Party Planning Co & Swoon by Katie

Anytime Nicole from Green Ribbon Party Planning Co sends a wedding my way, I know I’m going to LOVE it.  Remember this rustic red foodie wedding?  Well, today’s wedding is another to love.  The vibrant blues & yellows, the attention to detail, the bride’s gorgeous sleek gown – I’m loving it all!  The bride’s own words about the wedding:

With our families living on the east coast and abroad, we were excited to have a “destination wedding” roughly two hours from our home in Los Angeles. Nicole, our wedding planner, suggested Condor’s Nest Ranch. We all headed down there together and with our adoration of animals, nature and all things vintage, we quickly fell in love with the charm of the ranch.

Virginie Mai, a close friend of mine, wanted to contribute her creativity to the ceremony, never mind that she lives in France and is a busy mom to two adorable boys. Virginie made the ring pillow using fabric she found at her local fabric store in Valence, including a piece of vintage yellow velvet ribbon and hand stitched our initials and wedding date. Virginie also made the crystal and raw silk ribbon necklaces for the bridesmaids and bracelet for the Maid of Honor.

The vintage beadwork that wrapped the handle of my bouquet had previously adorned the Juliette cap worn by my grandmother on her wedding day in 1950.  The locket on the bouquet held vintage photos of my parents, always near and dear to my heart.

Aren’t these first look photos THE BEST!? The look on the groom’s face is priceless.

My custom gown was designed by my longtime college friend, couture gown designer, Casey Cadwallader.  The epitome of rustic chic, the lace on the bust and back straps added a romantic and vintage touch.  The silk chiffon skirt draped perfectly, creating a very feminine silhouette and was so comfortable to wear.  Most brides want to feel like a princess on their wedding day, but I was never the type to fantasize about my wedding day growing up. However, when your dear and talented friend custom designs your gown, it is impossible not to feel like you are in a fairytale!

We wanted to highlight the many talents of our friends and family and it was important for us to find meaningful ways for our loved ones to be a part of our wedding day. One of the most meaningful aspects was having my brother, Matthew, who resides in the UK, officiate the ceremony.

My advice for those planning now:  leverage your resources and delegate.  My sister, who was my maid of honor, selected the dresses and shoes for the bridesmaids.  She has great taste and knows my style so that was a huge help.  Spend as much as you can afford on your photographer, as that is the only tangible way to capture memories you will cherish for a lifetime.

Justin designed honey jar labels and we decorated each jar with cheesecloth and a bumble bee stamp on the lid. The sweet honey for these favors was sourced from bees kept on Justin’s parents’ ranch in Okeechobee, Florida.

I wanted to find a special way to honor my late father’s spirit on this important day and I found a sweet way to do so.  My parents were high school sweethearts and would celebrate my father’s high school basketball game wins at the Sweet Shop in Hicksville, NY in the early 1970′s.  Still operating today, with not much changed, I decided to forgo a traditional wedding cake and fashioned a dessert table as a re-creation of the Sweet Shop. I displayed framed menus from the original Sweet Shop and the red and white table runner was reminiscent of the red and white awning on the store front.  Our friend Jessica, a talented graphic designer, created a replica of the neon Sweet Shop sign. Guests indulged in all of the traditional desserts found at a vintage ice cream shop and were invited to make their own ice cream sundaes, root beer floats and treat themselves to delicious cookies and brownies. Justin even created Sweet Shop stickers for the ice cream cups!

Congrats to Jolene & Justin and many thanks to Nicole for sending this beauty of a wedding my way!  Be sure to check out the gallery for even more.

{Real Engagement} Stephanie & David: Valentine’s Day Inspired Engagement Session

Valentine's Day inspired Engagement | Sky Stone Photography & Twinkle Twinkle Little Party The thing I love about Valentine’s Day is that it is all about love. It doesn’t have to be about flowers and presents and dates and whether you’re with someone or not. It’s just about love. And I’m all for celebrating love of any kind. My mom still sends me Valentine’s Day cookies. My son exchanged Valentine’s with his little buddies this year. I send my girlfriends Valentine’s Day cards. If you love someone, you can celebrate Valentine’s Day.

So what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than an engagement session of a newly engaged couple celebrating their love? Oh, and it’s Valentine’s Day inspired too! THAT is better.

What a sweet engagement celebration, literally! So many yummy treats – but I think that rock candy is my favorite. The red and aqua color palette is fabulous and all of the heart details make my heart sing. I really heart hearts!

{Real Wedding} Nicole & David: Modern DIY Portland Wedding from Stacey Kane

modern DIY Portland Wedding by Stacey Kane
It’s no secret that I’m a vintage-lover, but when vintage is done in a modern way with a DIY spin, then I’m just downright giddy.  Today’s wedding is a touch of whimsy, mixed with the hipness of Portland, weaved together with personal DIY touches.  And the photos by Stacey Kane are just too good for words.

For our ceremony music, we had two young and very talented musicians playing the violin and the viola.  For the bridal party processional, they played the prelude of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G major.  I wanted to walk in to Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers,” so they created an amazing arrangement for that song.  The recessional piece was Mozart’s Duo in G.  And our first dance song was Bob Dylan’s “The Man in Me.”

Our venue was right on the water, located in the same complex as a marina, and the space used to be a factory where ships were built, so we also had a boat theme going on; I made kraft paper boats that we used as luminaries along the venue’s walkway, and I outfitted one boat with small cushions inside to use as a ring pillow.

My husband’s a writer, I love crafting things out of paper, and we love books, so much of the decor was created from old book pages.  A few highlights:  the escort cards were pinwheels made from illustrated children’s books, with a pencil for a stem; I made flower garlands out of muslin and book pages that draped over stacks of books for our centerpieces; and for the cocktail tables, we created book planters by carving a space right into the pages of an open book and planting succulents inside.

It was a labor of love to craft so much of the wedding decor ourselves, and in that way we put ourselves in every detail.  We had lots of help from family, friends, and Meghan our amazing wedding planner, so it felt like this big collaborative art project.  It was really important that David and I worked together and made decisions as a couple.  We were true partners in the planning, and I think that’s what made our wedding US.

I love all of the personal touches and DIY, but I think the pinwheels are my favorite!  Oh, and I love the bride’s braided updo.  What’s your favorite detail?

{Real Wedding} Tara & Jason: Pretty Blue Southern DIY Wedding

blue southern DIY wedding by LH Photography

I just love a good Southern wedding, don’t you?  Spanish moss, sweet tea, Southern charm…what’s not to love?  Between the soft blue color palette and the absolutely fab DIY glass chandelier that hung over the ceremony, this wedding fits the bill.

Advice to couples planning now?  I would say to start early and do tons of research. I think if you do your homework you can be creative and original without breaking the bank. It’s also so important to find the right vendors and that doesn’t happen overnight. I feel like our wedding day was so much fun and stress free because I had put so much time into the planning and I knew I could trust my vendors 100% to carry out my vision.

The one detail that was probably the most memorable was the glass globe candle chandelier at the ceremony. A friend with a metal workshop whipped up a stainless steel frame for me and I tied individual glass hanging globes with tea lights to the frame.  We hung the chandelier from rope on a tree branch that hung right over Jason and I at the ceremony. I thought it looked great as the sun was setting.

I would have to say that the attention to detail was my personal mark on the wedding day. I really tried to make everything individual to us from the custom designed programs and menus to the 5 different flavored cakes on antique stands and the DIY glass globe chandelier at the ceremony. I wanted there to be something beautiful and original everywhere you looked, I hope that came across to our guests.

I die over that chandelier!  And the shades of blue and gorgeous florals are pretty fantastic too.  Oh, and take note on that ceremony decor of candles lining the aisle.  A super budget friendly idea and just as beautiful as florals.  Maybe even more beautiful…  What do you think?

{Real Wedding} Brandy & Philip: Small Budget, DIY Country Vermont Wedding

small budget DIY country wedding in Vermont | Boro Creative Visions Photography

One of the things I love about my job is getting a little peek into people’s weddings and seeing parts of the country I’ve never been to before.  This sweet wedding in Vermont has added yet another place on my must-travel list.  And the emotion captured in the images by Boro Creative Visions Photography is heart melting too.

Advice for couples planning now?  Have fun and get creative! We had a very low budget wedding and had to really get creative and make our wedding our own. We didn’t have the budget for a traditional tier wedding cake so instead I used a Pepperidge Farm Vanilla Cake (that is what my parents had after they eloped!) and then used my in-laws original cake-topper from the 70′s. I made signs that explained the symbolism of the cake, it was one of my favorite details and cost almost nothing!

For centerpieces, I bought decorative watering cans from Michaels and grew petunias all summer in pots. For a simple project I placed the petunia pots into the watering cans and made homemade signs for the table names. The tables were named after mountains my husband and I have hiked together.

    {musical choices}
Ceremony: Forever Young by Bob Dylan – My husband’s very musical cousin played an acoustic version of the song during the ceremony.
Recessional: Once In A Lifetime by Talking Heads. My husband and I had a very chaotic year before our wedding: my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness, we had a surprise pregnancy and had just moved to Vermont.  This song was perfect for us!
First Dance Song: How Sweet it is to be Loved By You by James Taylor – A special song as we go to James Taylor’s concert every year on the 4th of July.small budget DIY country wedding in Vermont | Boro Creative Visions Photography
The simplicity of our wedding was perfect and the details represented all the things we love, the outside, family and Vermont.
How sweet is this wedding?  And their son in the last photos – adorbs!  I miss little baby feet…  Congrats on your baby boy and marriage, Brandy & Philip!
