Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Blues Brothers | Oh Lovely Day

Halloween is my favorite and has been since I was a kid. I love getting creative with costumes and trying to make rather than buy (it’s just more fun, don’t you think?) Since Charlie was born we’ve had fun thinking of costumes each year, and every year I think it is probably the last time that he wants to be something cool and fun and not just a Ninja Turtle or Superhero. But so far each year he has just as much fun coming up with unique ideas or dressing up in whatever I make as I do creating it. I’m super excited about what he and Calvin are going to be this year, and it would definitely be on this list if I had photos of them already. But I want to wait for the big Halloween reveal, so I’ll have to come back and update this post to add this year’s coordinating costume later.

If you’re looking for fun costume ideas for pairs, I thought I’d share some of my favorite ideas. Whether the pair is a couple, siblings, buddies, or a parent and child — all of these would work for whatever pair you may be dressing this year.

    The Blues Brothers

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Blues Brothers | Oh Lovely Day

I may be biased (since this is my husband and son Charlie) but I think this is the cutest costume for a pair of boys or a father-son pair ever. And it is so beyond easy. We already had most of this stuff in our wardrobe, and the “cigarettes” were just rolled up paper and I colored the end. A lollipop would also work well. And before you say anything, I don’t condone children smoking, adults smoking around children, or social Halloween smoking, but it really was a key element of the costume. No kids were harmed, I swear.

Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Willy Wonka and Oompa Loompa | Oh Lovely Day

One of my favorites from childhood, Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa are a great costume pair idea for a night all about candy. This momma made these costumes for her adorable boys and shared the full DIY on her blog, More Than Words Can Describe. SUPER impressive work.

Max and Moishe from Where the Wild Things Are

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Max & Moishe from Where The Wild Things Are | Oh Lovely Day

I love choosing beloved costumes from childhood, whether you are dressing kids or adults. So I think Max and Moishe from Where The Wild Things Are is such a darling idea. And how adorable are these two brothers in their awesome homemade costumes!? From Tried And True.

    Harold & The Purple Crayon

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Harold & The Purple Crayon | Oh Lovely Day

Talk about creative! The momma behind these two cutie pies (and these fabulous tees) made these costumes for her boys last year. I love the idea of choosing a pair of your favorite storybook characters to recreate for a pair of Halloween costumes, especially when it is outside the box like this one. So good. Follow mamacase on IG to see what she dresses her boys as this year.

Axl & Slash from Guns N’ Roses

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Axl & Slash from Guns N' Roses | Oh Lovely Day

Another fun idea where you can put some of your own wardrobe to use is an Axl and Slash costume. And it is especially adorable on two little ones, don’t you think? From Costume Works. Any famous band pair would also work well and be super fun.

The Little Boy and Old Man from Up

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: The Boy and Old Man from Up | Oh Lovely Day

Another super cute idea for a father-son costume is the little boy and old man from Up. This also comes from More Than Words Can Describe (she’s quite talented at creating costumes!)

    Any Pairing from Star Wars

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Star Wars | Oh Lovely Day

Think about it: you can pick a pair of Star Wars characters to fit any pair or couple you can think of. R2D2 and C-3PO, Han and Chewbacca, Luke and Leia, Vader and the Emperor, Jabba and bikini-clad Leia… the possibilities are endless. My two boys were R2D2 and Chewy last year — not really a pair but both were adorable and made by The Wishing Elephant (I didn’t have the energy to do costumes all by myself last year and she makes amazing ones that are so much better than Target-bought!). And with a new Star Wars movie coming out this year, it should be easy to find inspiration. May the force be with you.

What are your favorite costume ideas for pairs? What are you or your littles dressing as this year? Post your costumes or fun/favorite costume ideas and tag them with #OLD_halloween on IG so I can follow along and see them all!

    DIY Fall Escort Cards

DIY Fall Escort Cards | Oh Lovely Day

I’ve got another fun DIY coming at ya from DIY Contributor Chloe of Boxwood Avenue is sharing a fun fall escort card DIY that you can use for fall weddings or as place cards on a holiday table!

I’m getting married next fall and have been in full on pinspiration mode for all aspects of my wedding. I really want to incorporate some fall elements into the day, but I don’t want to turn it into a harvest party. I think these escort cards are the perfect way to add a little bit of fall without going overboard – I wanted something that could double as a favor, and could be set at the table, rather than having a designated ‘seating’ table. These turned out perfectly for that, and could also be used for any upcoming holiday parties!

    • Leaves (from around your yard, make sure they aren’t too dry)
    • Gold Paint
    • Small Paint Brush
    • Tulle (or container of choice – cheesecloth, mason jar, etc…)
    • This Pen – you’ll thank me later (or just use a sharpie)
    • Baker’s Twine
    • Mulling Spices (homemade or bought)

I picked up the leaves from around our yard, and I have to say, I love that they are foraged and not perfectly shaped or colored! I think, the more imperfections the better, because when painted, the brown spots look wonderful.

To start, you’ll either need to buy some mulling spices (can be found here) or make your own! I used a recipe from good ‘ole Martha, but feel free to make up your own. I played around with it a bit by adding orange peel and leaving out the cardamom.

Once you’ve got your mulling spices ready, cut your tulle into circles. I used two layers of tulle for my sachets and cut them to be about 8 inches in diameter. Another option would be to put the spices in cheesecloth (if you’re worried about the food quality of tulle) or little mason jars.

Now you’ll want to prepare your sachets. Add your mulling spices into the center of the tulle or whatever package you’re using. Then bundle them up and tie off with some baker’s twine, but don’t tie it into a bow yet!

Next gather as many leaves as you’ll need for your guests. The leaves will dry and become crinkly after a few days, so make sure the leaves you select are still ‘pretty’ when they’re dry. I found it easiest to use freshly fallen leaves that were still pliable for the next steps.

Paint each leaf with a bit of gold paint, and allow to dry (should take less than 15 minutes). Once dry, use your handy new pen (or a sharpie) to write the names of your guests on the leaves. Be careful not to press too hard or you will tear the leaf.

Now that your leaves are done, add them to your sachets. I tied a tight bow around the stem of the leaves, which worked very well; and that’s it, your guests are sure to love them!

Such a simple DIY that makes such an impact on your table, right? If I were hosting Thanksgiving dinner I would totally make these. Thanks to Chloe for the great idea! And if you love to create, take great photos, and want to submit a DIY to be published on Oh Lovely Day, send them my way to chandra@ohlovelyday.com with the subject line DIY submission. Photos must be high quality, DIY’s original, and preferably not yet published elsewhere. Full source list and instructions should be attached to email in a word doc, photos at least 600 pixels wide, and either attached to the email or submitted via dropbox. Can’t wait to see what you are creating!

Prep + Styling Tips For Your Fall Family Photoshoots

10 Tips for Preparing for Family Photoshoots | Oh Lovely Day

Fall family photos are my fave (say that fast three times!) and fall is the most popular time for family photoshoots, since you all want a current photo for those holiday cards. Since we’ve had 8 family photoshoots since Charlie was born (well, 6 plus one maternity and then a recent newborn shoot for Calvin), so I feel like I’m becoming an expert. And while some of these tips are kiddo related, you can use a lot of these to prep for an engagement session as well.  Read More »

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year: sweater weather, all things pumpkin, changing leaves, fall family fun – it’s the best. Even though fall weather hasn’t reached Los Angeles yet (still coming off what I hope is our last heat wave of the year), I’m getting in the spirit thanks in part to this stunning Autumn Bounty inspiration I’m sharing today. • The Land of Nod, design for kids and people that used to be kids
    • This week was a rough one. I feel like I say that every week but this one really was. Today alone had me at my breaking point. All three of my kids seemed hell bent on driving me crazy. Quincy literally wouldn't let me put him down or leave the room without a major scream-cry fest. He rode around on the fuss bus allllll day. Tropical storm Calvin left destruction in his wake everywhere he went (if you follow me on snap/stories you got a little sampling but that was nowhere near the extent of it). At one point I went into a room away from my kids and sat in a chair and cried. Within three minutes one of them found me (of course) gave me a hug, and we were all better (except Calvin -- I think this is his permanent state ). This photo is my version of thinking happy thoughts. Bougainvillea vibes ✌️️✨ And just like that, summer is back Take me back to the fall weather of two days ago! Also, take me back to when this kid slept past 5 am and took naps. For a week now, between 4:30-5:30 am this kid climbs up on our bed over top of me and proceeds to squrim, poke, and annoy me till I get up. Quincy's sleeping till 6 or later FINALLY and now Calvin is waking me up!? And he refused to nap today (again) too. Seriously you guys, he's killin' me. He looks real cute in rain gear but if he does it again tonight he's headed to toddler military school. #sotiredineedanewwordfortired #calvins3rdyear #battlefieldmotherhood
You know what is a great motivator? Not wanting to be outdone by your big bro. Cause look who's pulling himself up, so he can keep up #quincysmilestones #calvinandquincy #lawdhelpme #charlieandcalsroomredo There were very few baby things I hadn't yet tried by the time I had Quincy but I hadn't really used a sling before. I got my first sling when I was still pregnant with Q and tried it with Calvin, but once Cal was walking he never wanted to be carried. He's far too busy for all that. So Quincy is the first baby I've used a sling with, and I feel like I really missed out with the other two. I had and loved other carriers with them (and still do) but there is just something about the sling that is magical and it is my carrier of choice right now. It is convenient (you can keep it threaded and just throw it on), it is cozy, it doesn't tightly wrap behind my back which always makes me sweaty, and I can nurse while Quincy is in it which has been a lifesaver. I'm actually nursing him in this photo! I'm sharing photos from our recent visit to the pumpkin patch and how I got to do all the things with my family while wearing Quincy in the sling because I didn't have to stay with him in the stroller or go find a place to nurse him. He chilled, ate, and napped in my sling. And because I love it so much I'm teaming up with @mywildbird to give one reader a sling of their choice!
