How to Invite the President to your Wedding

invite the President to your weddingSo I instagramed this picture yesterday and had a lot of people asking me how I got a note of congratulations from President Obama. So I thought I would share my secret: I invited him!

Yes, you can invite the President of the United States to your wedding, and he (aka an intern) will send you a congrats! We were married during an election year, so this was even cooler to me then. If you want one too, here’s what you do.

Send a wedding invitation (I had ours addressed by our calligrapher with the rest of our invitations) to the following address:

Honorable Barack Obama and Mrs. Obama
    The White House
    Greetings Office Rm. 39
    1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
    Washington, DC 20500

And the photo above is the response I got, which is a treasured keepsake. I think it is something my kids and grandkids will love too.

I’ve also heard of people inviting other celebrities, and even Mickey Mouse (for those of you who are Disney superfans). Who would you invite to your wedding? Dream wedding guest?

While your wedding is a day for joy and celebration many of us had or will have a loved one missing from their special day.  For me, it was my dad.  Whether you are missing a parent, grandparent, sibling, or dear friend, you may want to honor them in some way.  Keep in mind how fresh your loss is, if you’d like to honor them publicly or privately, and what the most appropriate way to honor them would be.  If you want to do something beyond lighting a candle, making mention in your ceremony program, or having a photo display like the one above, here are some ideas to get you started.
