{Lovely Ever After} My Birth Story: Charles Dashiell

lovely ever after: birth story of oh lovely daySince this weekend is Mother’s Day, and because I’ve wanted to share for a while (after some time had passed and it wasn’t so fresh) I’m sharing my birth story.  If you don’t want to hear my birth story, you should skip today’s post.  If you think giving birth is as easy as Kourtney Kardashian made it look in that episode where she pulled her baby out of her own vagina while looking pretty darn good (I totally thought if SHE could do that, it would be a breeze for me), skip this post.  If you are on the fence about having a baby, skip this post.  If you don’t want to hear a ‘real’ birth story, with all the bad stuff that can come along with it, SKIP THIS POST.  I don’t want to scare you and I don’t want to gross you out.  Let me just say up front, I did not poop on the table.  Or at least everyone is polite enough to tell me I didn’t.  I honestly don’t know how you couldn’t, but I was told I didn’t.  So you won’t hear that – that’s good news, right?

Ok, those of you still reading have been warned.  I mean, it wasn’t THAT bad.  But it did last 26 hours (which means this is going to be a loooong post).  Some of you are going to stop reading now aren’t you? Read More »

{Lovely Ever After} Tips for Feeding Healthy Foods to your Kids + A Recipe

    making fun food for kids

Hi readers!  My name is Meg and I blog over at Happy Kids, Inc.  I also own a wedding business (Wedding Belle Favors), and that’s how I have gotten to cross paths with the lovely Chandra. We’ve gotten to know each other mainly through Twitter and Instagram, as our wedding and mama worlds have overlapped.  When Chandra came to me with her idea about a weekly Mom-themed blog post, I knew I would want to participate.

One thing that I know Chandra, myself, and many of you moms out there struggle with is feeding our children.  I have always been a stickler for feeding my children fresh fruits and vegetables everyday, avoiding processed foods, keeping fast food or dinners out as a “treat”, and cooking from scratch almost exclusively (I do admit to the weekly pizza night on Friday!).   Read More »

{Lovely Ever After} The Perfect Springtime Cocktail

strawberry lemonade cocktailHello lovelies!  I’m headed to NYC today to partake in Bridal Market this weekend (be sure to follow along on instagram for bridal previews and NYC fun) so today, DIY Contributor Courtney of a little glass box is back with the simplest and best DIY of all: the perfect springtime (and summer!) cocktail.  Enjoy!

    strawberry lemonade cocktail

As we say hello to longer days and look forward to sunshine kissed evenings with cool breezes, dining outside seems to be one of my favorite things to do. I must say I am a simple girl. Match any kind of meal with a cocktail and I’m happy. One of my spring time favorites is freshly squeezed strawberry lemonade with a splash of citrus vodka. Here is a simple recipe that makes me swoon.

I must admit my favorite part is accessorizing my drink with a fun straw and a delicious rim of sugar. It makes it feel just a bit more special for any backyard gathering. Hopefully this will be one of your favorites too.

Cheers!  What’s your favorite al fresco dining cocktail?

    What Makes a Marriage?

backyard Ohio wedding | gina leigh photo

Oftentimes we get so busy planning the wedding, picking out the perfect details, trying on dresses, and selecting vendors, that we forget what the wedding is all about.  What’s it all for?  At the end of the day it is all about the marriage.  Today I mostly wanted to take a minute to remember that, and to open up the post to those of you who are married, have been for a while or are still in your first year, to share what you think makes a marriage.  Think of it as a virtual guestbook where you can leave your advice for those soon-to-be-marrieds – what’s your best advice?  What is the one tip you would share?

LA DIY wedding | Jennifer Roper Photography

In my four married years (and many more than that dating years) with my husband, I’ve learned a lot about myself.  I’ve learned a lot about men.  I’ve learned a lot about partnership and compromise and marriage.  I learned that it doesn’t matter if the toothpaste tube belongs in the medicine cabinet but is always left on the sink.  It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t bring you flowers all the time.  It doesn’t matter if you’re always right.  And you can’t always be right.  Even if you are… (this one I’m still working on.)

NYC wedding | Moshayedi PhotographyMarriage isn’t easy.  It takes work.  And that isn’t a bad thing.  Just like anything else (exercise, creativity, relationships), if you don’t work on it, it gets lazy.  It gets stale.  It gets taken for granted.  I really liked this post from a divorced guy who owns up to the 16 ways he says he blew his marriage.  And many are really obvious things, but things we all do, have done, could easily do…

modern wedding couple | paige winn photographyI remember before I got married and had a baby I thought “I’ll never become that wife who neglects her spouse because she has a baby.”  Then I had a baby.  And do you know what I did? I became that wife.  It’s so hard not too – it is all hormones and maternal instincts and you caring so much for this tiny person who can’t do anything on their own that you rarely get a shower or a meal yourself.  How are you supposed to pay attention to yet another person?  But you know what?  That’s marriage.  You have to work it out and find a way to keep your relationship prioritized.  It might take a while (and that’s ok too).  But you have to do it.  That’s what I mean about it being work.  Because there will be times it feels like work.  Whether it is cooking your partner dinner or doing their laundry, talking things out when you disagree, having sex when you really don’t feel like it, taking the kids and giving them a day off, going to counseling to work on an issue: whatever it takes is what you need to do to keep your marriage happy and healthy.  And then you’ll have one of those days where you just laugh and laugh and look over at your partner and remember how hot they are and get butterflies all over again.  Marriage is awesome that way.

NJ Boardwalk wedding So if I had to say what I think makes a marriage, I’d have to say that the love keeps you in it but it is the little things (the hand holding, spooning, date nights, mutual respect, making each other feel special, knowing when they need a hug and knowing when they need space) that keep the love fires burning.

What do you think makes a marriage?

{Lovely Ever After} 5 Easy & Affordable Ways to Update Your Living Space + A Shopping Guide

tips for updating your living spaceMy husband and I lived together in our current apartment for a few years before we got married. Then we had a baby. Now that baby is a very active toddler. My family of three, and all of our stuff, have officially outgrown our LA apartment. We’ve been house hunting for a while, but it is a long and frustrating process and I’m trying to keep myself from getting antsy and impatient by updating our current living space. And I love how it turned out.

Many couples live together before they get married these days and many of you also pay for most, or all, of your own weddings. You’re on a budget. And if you live in a city like I do, you have space challenges as well. But that doesn’t mean you can’t live in a great space and that you can’t redecorate. Here are 5 easy & affordable ways to update your living space.

    1.  Change your throw pillows.tips for updating your living: change your throw pillows space

Changing up your throw pillows allows you to add pops of color and texture, and just freshen things up without a lot of effort.  Play with mixing patterns, shapes, and sizes, keeping it cohesive by staying within the same color family.  Most of my pillows are in shades of teal, aqua, and pale blue in different sizes and patterns.  I threw in a couple of  matching grey chevron ones and one in coral to add an extra pop.  The California shaped pillow was an oldie-but-goodie piece that I love, but that is showing some wear because Charlie is really into pillow fights these days…

    2.  Add pops of a new color. tips for updating your living space: add color

My previous color palette was pale blue, cream, and beige.  I switched it up by adding pops of coral in affordable pieces like a table lamp and an ottoman (both on clearance at my Target store!), which tied in the coral throw pillow.  I added a patterned shade in my palette to the lamp (also from Target).

    3.  Change your window treatments. tips for updating your living space: change your window treatments

Curtains and window treatments can get expensive, but they can also make a big impact.  I picked these ombré ones from Target that look gorgeous with the light that comes through and were really affordable as well.  Oh, and I added a brass accent table too to bring a little more modern into my vintage style.

    4.  Add a fabulous rug.  tips for updating your living space My favorite addition is my new grey + cream chevron striped rug, which was a One Kings Lane score. It anchors the room, ties in the color and pattern palettes, and I love how the shag style adds texture. And Charlie likes how it feels on his toes.  Rugs can get really expensive, so shop around.  Sales on One Kings Lane and Joss & Main are great places to look, as well as places like Target & World Market.

And you can see that Charlie added his own touches by scattering cars all over the floor.  Pretty standard around here.  Always cars, everywhere.

    5.  Don’t forget to add some personality. tips for updating your living space: add art & vintage finds

Add some art, a hang new print, change up your framed photos, mix your quirky vintage finds with your modern pieces – add a bit of ‘you’ to the space.  I love my Abraham Lincoln quote print from etsy, which inspired my new color palette.  It centers my workspace and the gallery wall of other prints and art I have.  One of my favorite-ever vintage finds is that white cameo ceramic container, which I use on my desk to hold my pens and my grandmother’s vintage scissors.  It sits next to my new brass elephant.  Don’t you love brass?

    Inspired?  Here’s your shopping guide!

Here’s where you can find some of the things I used to update (and a few oldie but goodie pieces) in my living space:  ombré window panels / brass accent table / chevron rug / brass animals / coral x bench (from target but only available in some stores – I found mine after going to 4 area Targets, on clearance for $35!) / coral lamp (another in-store clearance find) / coral pillow / aqua ikat circle pillow / teal knitted pillow / light blue kaleidoscope patterned pillow / grey chevron pillow / grey chevron baskets / brass lamp / macbook chevron decal / CA pillow

Here are some other great pieces to try that would be great additions to living space to add texture, color, and a fresh look:  coral pouf / yellow framed mirror / coral lattice tray / white ceramic stool / coral polka dot ottoman / gold chevron glasses or votives / black + white chevron rug / candy striped baskets / green modern patterned pillow / mod end table / white whale pitcher

{Lovely Ever After} Pregnancy Wardrobe Must-Haves from Kiss My Tulle

Today’s Lovely Ever After post is for you ladies who are pregnant, or plan to be soon, from my friend & fellow blogger (and current preggo) Cris of Kiss My Tulle. Kiss My Tulle is a website devoted to helping engaged couples create the wedding of their dreams on a manageable budget, and this post follows that same budget-friendly, practical advice. Cris is sharing her pregnant (and plus-sized) must-haves today.  Take it away, Cris!

I’m a little over 5 months pregnant and HUGE. Like, in the last 2 years I managed to lose 60+ pounds and (I’m not exaggerating) I think I have gained them all back – mostly during my first miserable trimester. I was nauseous 24/7 for 12 weeks and the only thing that made me feel better was eating McDonald’s French fries. A LOT of McDonald’s French fries. So none of my clothes fit and I’ve had to buy some new clothes to accommodate my new weight (and my new baby bump). Here are my favorites (they’re VERY budget-friendly):

pregnant and plus-sized must haves from kiss my tulleSweet Dreams Maternity Wear Maternity Leggings // Maternity Cropped Denim Jacket // Maternity Chevron-Striped Maxi Skirt // Maternity Polka-Dot Side-Shirred Tank // Naughty Monkey Bullet Knee-High Boot // Quiksilver Azalea Shirt // Basic Athletic Rib Racerback 2×1 Tank Top

Thanks, Cris.  I had a very similar experience during my first trimester, although I just ate a lot of carbs to battle my nausea.  I love Cris’s wardrobe picks.  Leggings, tanks, maxi skirts & dresses, and ballet flats were also staples of mine.  I also extended my pre-preggo wardrobe with one of these (actually, a couple) which helped with work pants and jeans for a while before I wore maternity pants (and for a few weeks postpartum as well).

What were your go to wardrobe pieces during your pregnancy?  Share your favorites below in the comments.
