{Real Wedding} Beki & Justin: Simple & Relaxed Outdoor Chicago Wedding

I love the simplicity of this wedding.  So lovely, so chic, and so simple.  Also, super budget-friendly!  It’s one of those weddings that show you all the “stuff” isn’t necessary.  The “stuff” is just the decor on an already gorgeous cake called LOVE.  And I’m swooning over the gorgeous photos by The Duchess and the Rabbit.

The first thing my mom said when she found out we were engaged was “I’ll make your wedding dress, just send me a picture of what you want.” The final result was a beautiful buttery soft, one-of-a kind dress that was exactly what I had envisioned. My mom had even embroidered a hidden quote in light blue on the inside of the bodice: “a wife of noble character is worth far more than rubies.”

I know it’s cliche but honestly, there were so many great moments during the wedding that I don’t think I could pick a favorite. I probably laughed the hardest when my husband (on a whim) decided to do the bouquet toss and one of our male friends did a dive from across the room to catch it. I got the most choked up when Justin’s best childhood friend read “The Tent” by Rumi. The moment that I most regret not documenting was when two of our friends played ukelele and sang a sweet rendition of the Magnetics Fields “The Book of Love.”

I made as many things as I reasonably could find time for, including the save the dates and invitations, reception decor (flag garland, large framed initials, centerpieces) and the flowers for the ceremony. I thought the flag garland for the reception would be a quick and easy project but it actually ended up taking forever! Cutting all those triangles and ironing 50 feet of ribbon is way less fun than it sounds. Anything that I didn’t make, like the tablecloths, beverage dispensers, etc., I ordered online and resold or donated afterwards.

How did you make your wedding YOU?
Our goal was to keep things simple, informal and budget friendly. It was important to us to emphasize the things that matter most to us: gathering around good food with good friends, and fun tunes. Early on in the planning my fiance said something that really stuck with me, he said that he wanted to avoid the “Us vs Them” feeling that he often experiences at weddings. So we really tried to incorporate our friends and family and make them feel that they were part of and included in the celebrations as much as possible. We were so grateful & honored to have so many friends step up and volunteer to demonstrate their various talents. One of my good friends made the oh-so-delicious cake, Justin’s best friend officiated and wrote the ceremony, two amazing friends played violin during the ceremony, and then during the reception our wedding party read poems, told stories and sang songs. In the end our wedding was a fun and relaxed affair which, in general, is how we roll.

I so love this wedding, both because of everything the bride said about it, and because it is just so perfectly simple and lovely.  It feels like love – like everyone the couple loved participated in some way in the wedding.  Congrats Beki & Justin!

{Real Wedding} Heidi & Carl: Offbeat DIY New Zealand Wedding

So sorry for a late post today, but I was so wrapped up with the Olympics last night that I couldn’t do a post for you, so I had to wait until this morning!  Way to go Fab Five & the US swimmers!!  But I was able to get the post together for you, and I love how this couple threw the unconventional wedding they had dreamed of.  Enjoy.

We did a lot of DIY.  The wine bottle-vases are a product of months of saving our own bottles and taking home the used bottles from my work (in a restaurant) we spray painted them and made little wooden table numbers that hung around them.  My husband made 88 mini blackboards and my Maid of Honour spray painted them with blackboard paint we used them and place settings.  We used a couple of old windows and chalk ink to make the table plan.  I spent months collecting white daisy brooches with which I made my brooch bouquet.

Our whole wedding was one giant personal moment. One that for me was truly intimate was when one of our friends sung Boyce Avenue’s version of Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage dream’ at the end of our ceremony. It was a surprise planned by my husband that I definitely didn’t see coming.
For Carl a wonderful personal moment was at the very end of our speech when we surprised our guests by telling them that Mr Whippy was waiting outside to serve them all dessert…which was a surprise.offbeat DIY New Zealand wedding | photos by http://www.baylymoore.com
How did you make your wedding YOU?
We really wanted our wedding day to reflect us so somethings were a little unconventional, we had Thai food, which we ate with unusual bamboo utensils (they were kind of a cross between tongs and chopsticks).  The boys wore jeans and Chuck Taylor shoes. These were all things that, during the planning stages, people said were strange, but everyone loved them on the day.  There is absolutely no mold you should be fitting into, it’s all about creating the best day of your life whatever that may be.

Great advice from the bride, don’t you think?  Make your wedding a reflection of you and what makes you happy.

On a personal note, 17 years ago today I had my first date with my now husband, when we were 16.  It is crazy to think about!

Don’t you just love his socks with sandals look? :)

{Real Wedding} Katie & Wes: Cheery DIY Lakeside Chicago Wedding

There are a few places where I’ve lived or traveled that hold a special place in my heart, and Chicago tops them all.  It is just the best city and I miss it all the time.  Yeah the weather sucks 65% of the time, but on those days when the weather is good, there is no place like it.  So when this wedding came my way, it was like going home (my second home) for a little bit.  I’m so excited to share it with you today!  It just makes me happy.

    From the bride:
We stuck true to both of our personalities and worked to find a combination of playful and stylish, from the food to the decor to little details of the ceremony and celebration. We opted for cheesecakes instead of traditional wedding cake and had food that reflected Wes’ North Carolina roots. My dress and shoes were really reflective of my personality – the shorter length keeping things playful and a little edgy.

Before arriving at the wedding, my bridesmaids and I took pictures downtown. We felt almost famous, standing in the middle of the street all decked out. People were honking and waving and pre-celebrating with us for a second, and it was a great way to get excited for the hours to come.
Wes’s favorite thing about Chicago is the lake, so when we found this beautiful park and gorgeous building sitting on a peninsula right on the lake, we couldn’t say no. The water and city skyline made for an awesome view for guests and an incredible backdrop to our vows.
My bridesmaids and I did all of the flowers on our own. It added a little bit of stress the day before the wedding, but it was totally worth it. We saved a ton of money, and it was actually a lot of fun making the bouquets and boutonnieres. They felt really special.
We really wanted to walk down the aisle to something special and different, and we opted for the acoustic version of “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service. It made for the most beautiful feeling and was perfect for the lakefront setting.
Our first dance was to the acoustic version of “Beloved One” by Ben Harper. In the first few weeks of getting to know each other, I made Wes a CD of some of my favorite songs, and that song was one of them.

One of my favorite moments of the day was about twenty minutes before I walked down the aisle. My bridesmaids and I were hiding out in a back room, looking out the window at everything all set up, seeing guests begin to arrive, and of course, spying on Wes as he checked things out and talked to a few people. It was really exciting to see him. He looked amazing, and I almost started crying and ruined my makeup.
Ah, I just love this wedding!  From the DIY florals (seriously, what an incredible job!), to the lakeside setting…le sigh.  And the personal touches that this couple incorporated to make their wedding them were perfect.  I’m also really loving the citrus touches in the centerpieces and with the favors!  What’s your favorite detail?  Do tell :)

{Real Wedding} Amanda & Jason: Handmade Fall Wedding with a Pretty in Pink Bride

Happy March!  Did everyone do something fun and special for Leap Year Day yesterday?  Did anyone do something really cool, like get engaged? I’d love to hear!

So before I share today’s fantabulous (that’s like the Brangelina version of fantastic and fabulous!) I have to ask you all a big favor.  So I’m sure you already know about lover.ly, (but if you don’t go check it out right this second – it is like Pinterest for wedding content but properly credits every image to boot!) and you’ve probably made tons of bundles of your own already.  Well a bundle I created is a finalist in lover.ly’s bundle up contest.  If I win I essentially get a makeover via a $500 Nordstrom gift card and $200 Paul Mitchell prize.  As a momma of a little boy you have NO idea how much I need this.  I’ve talked about my thyroid disorder, and my tough first year as a mom, so I’ve only recently gotten back into my pre-baby clothes, only to find that they are at least three years old and either super worn or totally outdated (aside from a few staple items, of course).  This momma needs to feel cool again by treating myself to some new clothes without the guilt of spending the family money.

So, if you could be so kind as to vote for my ‘gilded’ bundle, I would be eternally grateful.  You can vote once a day until 3/2!  Thanks y’all!  xx

So, now that I’ve asked something of you all, let me repay you with some wedding eye candy!  This wedding has “personality” written all over it.  From the bride’s fun pink dress, to the sweet Dr. Seuss quote on their programs, to the cake topper, it is all them.  I just love that.  Enjoy!

From the bride (with a little bit of commentary from me in bold):

I had an extremely busy schedule leading up to the wedding day.  The Tuesday before the wedding I had my Ph.D. proposal (about trying to find the gamma-ray emission site in a type of very bright galaxy called blazars- what the what!?  crafty AND a genius!) so in the weeks before the wedding I was at school until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. every day. People would ask me, “How is the wedding coming along?” and I responded that they really should be asking how is the proposal coming because I had my mom and sister do the wedding stuff. Because everyone was really busy, a lot of little stuff didn’t get done until literally the day before the wedding (programs, etc.). The night before, I went to Jason’s parents’ house to visit with their family who had come from out of town. I had to leave early because I still hadn’t put together my veil (at like 8pm the night before).  I knew all along that the wedding and my Ph.D. proposal would coincide, but I still wanted to have so many DIY details because I just love crafty-type things and they were a lot of fun to put together.  In all honesty, everything wouldn’t have looked as nice as it did if my mom and sister hadn’t worked their butts off on that stuff, and I really credit them with taking care of a lot of the details when I was trapped at school.  Even though they drove me a little crazy, in the end I’m so glad the DIY details were there (take note of this sentence DIY-aspiring brides!). I think my favorite detail was the books on the tables.  Jason and I are both HUGE bookworms and sci-fi nerds (that’s kind of a given, being that he’s an aerospace engineer and I’m getting my Ph.D. in astrophysics). About two-thirds of the books came from our collection of books. Some were even textbooks from our undergrad/grad classes.  And of course, as big time “sci-fi nerds,” we had to have very special cake toppers, Star Wars’ Han and Leia (love that Leia has a bouquet!)

What did I tell you?  So good, right?  A perfect example of making your wedding YOU.  Well done Amanda & Jason (and Amanda’s mom and sister!).   What is your favorite personal element?  I think mine is that cake topper and I love that boutonniere (which was also DIY, BT-dubs!)  I want to hear yours in the comments!
