Rustic + Elegant Barn Wedding: Jessica & Adam

rustic barn wedding from crystal george studiosWhen I saw the adorable dog in today’s wedding I knew I had to share it (I can’t resist a pup in a bowtie!), and he’s just the beginning of all the sweet rustic goodness.  Handmade wooden signs, jam favors, gorgeous florals, and the barn venue in Charlottesville, Virginia…what’s not to love!?  And something that makes this wedding especially unique – the groom planned and DIY’d most of this wedding himself, because his bride was in nursing school. Rustic Glam Wedding: Katee & Steve

rustic glam wedding | casey connell photography & By Emily B eventsWhen Gatsby meets Upstate New York, you know you’re in for a treat. And that’s exactly what today’s wedding is: the perfect blend of rustic and glam. The barn venue mixed with the silver sequin linens; the wheat + feather details combined with black and white stripey straws; the outdoor autumn setting contrasted with the glamorous bridal attire and groom’s tuxedo – like I said, the perfect blend of rustic and glam.  And absolute perfection.  Oh, and the couple has the sweetest story of how they met, which I’m sharing from the groom’s perspective.  It’s totally worth the read!

rustic glam wedding | casey connell photography & By Emily B events rustic glam wedding | casey connell photography & By Emily B events Advice for couples planning now?  Be confident in your ideas and your vision. Everyone is going to have an opinion, but stick to what makes YOU happy and excited. Find a team of vendors that you mesh with. Of course you have to admire their work, but when you connect with the people you are working with, everything seems to effortlessly fall into place. I feel like our wedding day was completely stress free and I had such a blast, I didn’t have a worry in the world because we had such an AMAZING group of people we were working with.

We collected small river stones and had them displayed by the ceremony entrance. Each guest was asked to take a ‘Blessing Stone’ with them to their seat, during the ceremony our officiant asked that each guest silently add their own blessings to these stones. Just as stones provide a strong foundation upon which to build, those Blessing Stones are now displayed in our house, reminding us each day of the love of our family and friends, our love for each other.

This song holds such special meaning to us, especially since I played it on our second date. It’s such a simple and beautifully written song-it gives me chills every time I hear it. The lyrics couldn’t be more fitting for our story.

We decided to run with that idea for favors, letting our guests pick and chose which one’s they wanted. We found this really great shop on etsy where you can customize the packaging and pick from an assortment of flavors. They were a hit! Guests raved about the fair trade coffee we chose.

Our vision was rustic simplicity meets classy city chic. We both really love the style and grace of the 1920′s/30′s and wanted our day to capture that feel of vintage charm as well. When we became engaged we knew that we wanted to create a wedding that was personal and we wanted to make sure our guests felt special and included. Our day felt very intimate and sacred. Oak Hill, the estate where we held our wedding, is such a magical place in itself, it was amazing getting to share it with those we hold closest to our hearts. It was a day filled with love and gratitude.

Somewhere in our relationship, we began saying, ‘Forever, For Always, and No Matter What’. I had this printed on the top of our wedding programs, it’s almost become our little motto. Steve even wrote it into his vows. I would say that what made my wedding me was all the little unique details and special touches throughout the day. I put a lot of thought, time and effort into these details and it fills my heart to know they did not go unnoticed.

Do you see why I love this wedding so much?  And there’s more!  The wedding trailer by Clark + Walker Studio had me in tears last night when I watched it again while putting the finishing touches on today’s feature.  And Katee & Steve have the sweetest love story.  I don’t usually publish this much writing from the couple, but I just had to share it, so if you want to read it you can get his and her versions below.  And be sure to check out the gallery for even more rustic glam goodness.  Congrats Katee & Steve on a gorgeous wedding and a beautiful love story.

Story of how the couple met as told by Steve:

We were literally just down the road and around the corner from each other for around 12 years on and off. Katee was born and raised on a picturesque country road in Kinderhook, NY overlooking the rolling farm hills of Columbia County that I have now come to know and love. I grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where I fell asleep staring at the tip of the Empire State Building and the Citicorp building.

After 35 years of working hard in the city, my parents finally decided to get back to their country roots and ended up buying a beautiful piece of land right on that picturesque country road I was telling you about earlier, which happened to be right next door to Katee’s parents.

Over the next years as my parents planned and built their house, I started finding myself on their land more and more to the point where I was coming up to Kinderhook every chance I got. I also met and learned to like Katee’s parents as well as her brother, all the while never even knowing that she existed. Finally a day came when Katee met my parents and I first learned that there was a fourth member to the Austin family. I’ll never forget my fathers first words to me about her, “you should meet this Katee girl, I think you’d really like her.” The seed was planted. Little did I know that across the street Katee’s mother had also planted a seed with her, saying something along the lines of, “you really need to meet that Scoblic boy.”

I’ll never forget the night we first met because I was attempting to cook Katee dinner and had asked her to simply bring herself and some ice. When the door opened, man, she was gorgeous!!!  As she tells it, a smile came across my face from ear to ear that she’ll never forget. When we went to exchange the bag of ice, as if some energy hit us, or maybe because we just couldn’t take our eyes off of each other,  the bag of ice hit the floor and exploded in every direction. We both laughed, and smiled, and began to get to know one another.

We ate and talked, and talked some more. We drove down to my favorite spot on the property that overlooks rolling meadows and opens up to a great view of the night-time sky. We saw two shooting stars and talked until 2am in the morning, something magical was in the air–Something bigger than us had brought us together. A year later, I would bring Katee back to that exact same spot to propose…

(GAH! And I’m crying again.  I’m such a sucker for love.)

{Real Wedding} Erin & Michael: Vintage Fall Wedding With A Dramatic Edge

vintage Vegas wedding with gorgeous florals | Gaby J PhotographyThis wedding captured my attention with the dramatic and unique bouquet in deep shades and accented with a single feather. The rest of the florals are equally fabulous and perfect for a fall wedding. And the best part? They were DIY! Another fantastic DIY detail is the ceremony arch, built by the groom himself. vintage Vegas wedding with gorgeous florals | Gaby J Photography vintage Vegas wedding with gorgeous florals | Gaby J Photography vintage Vegas wedding with gorgeous florals | Gaby J Photography vintage Vegas wedding with gorgeous florals | Gaby J Photographyvintage Vegas wedding with gorgeous florals | Gaby J Photography DIY projects: We made our wedding ceremony arch. I love how budget-friendly this wedding is, yet the florals make it look the opposite.  I still can’t believe those were all DIY – so well done!  Loving the bride’s bouquet and that ceremony arch so much, aren’t you?

{Real Wedding} Eva & James: Relaxed Beach Wedding on Lake Michigan

fall beach wedding on lake michigan | markit photographyMarrying your childhood sweetheart while barefoot on the beach…don’t so many of us fantasize about doing that? Well, Eva & James met in 4th grade. Yep, I said FOURTH. James crushed on Eva for a long time and the two started dating in high school. As one half of a high school sweetheart couple myself, I love these stories. This wedding was relaxed, laid-back, and fun, just like the couple themselves. I love that everyone was barefoot and am just a bit obsessed with Eva’s queen anne’s lace bouquet.

The cottage has been a very special place to us as a couple since high school. We would go up any weekend we could in the summers and even winters. We have spent countless hours swimming in Lake Michigan, boating, running/walking along the beach, and having fires on the beach at night with friends. James proposed on the beach there, so with that big memory and so many others that took place there, we decided we couldn’t get married anywhere else. With the ceremony right on the beach in front of the cottage and the reception in the backyard – the location was totally us.

The color palette of this wedding is perfect for late summer/early fall and the laid back vibe and breezy J.Crew bridesmaids dresses were a great compliment to this beach ceremony.  And don’t you LOVE that bouquet!?  Congrats to Eva & James!

{Real Wedding} Jolene & Justin: Modern Rustic Condor’s Nest Ranch Wedding

modern rustic Condor's Nest Ranch Wedding | Green Ribbon Party Planning Co & Swoon by Katie

Anytime Nicole from Green Ribbon Party Planning Co sends a wedding my way, I know I’m going to LOVE it.  Remember this rustic red foodie wedding?  Well, today’s wedding is another to love.  The vibrant blues & yellows, the attention to detail, the bride’s gorgeous sleek gown – I’m loving it all!  The bride’s own words about the wedding:

With our families living on the east coast and abroad, we were excited to have a “destination wedding” roughly two hours from our home in Los Angeles. Nicole, our wedding planner, suggested Condor’s Nest Ranch. We all headed down there together and with our adoration of animals, nature and all things vintage, we quickly fell in love with the charm of the ranch.

Virginie Mai, a close friend of mine, wanted to contribute her creativity to the ceremony, never mind that she lives in France and is a busy mom to two adorable boys. Virginie made the ring pillow using fabric she found at her local fabric store in Valence, including a piece of vintage yellow velvet ribbon and hand stitched our initials and wedding date. Virginie also made the crystal and raw silk ribbon necklaces for the bridesmaids and bracelet for the Maid of Honor.

The vintage beadwork that wrapped the handle of my bouquet had previously adorned the Juliette cap worn by my grandmother on her wedding day in 1950.  The locket on the bouquet held vintage photos of my parents, always near and dear to my heart.

Aren’t these first look photos THE BEST!? The look on the groom’s face is priceless.

My custom gown was designed by my longtime college friend, couture gown designer, Casey Cadwallader.  The epitome of rustic chic, the lace on the bust and back straps added a romantic and vintage touch.  The silk chiffon skirt draped perfectly, creating a very feminine silhouette and was so comfortable to wear.  Most brides want to feel like a princess on their wedding day, but I was never the type to fantasize about my wedding day growing up. However, when your dear and talented friend custom designs your gown, it is impossible not to feel like you are in a fairytale!

We wanted to highlight the many talents of our friends and family and it was important for us to find meaningful ways for our loved ones to be a part of our wedding day. One of the most meaningful aspects was having my brother, Matthew, who resides in the UK, officiate the ceremony.

My advice for those planning now:  leverage your resources and delegate.  My sister, who was my maid of honor, selected the dresses and shoes for the bridesmaids.  She has great taste and knows my style so that was a huge help.  Spend as much as you can afford on your photographer, as that is the only tangible way to capture memories you will cherish for a lifetime.

Justin designed honey jar labels and we decorated each jar with cheesecloth and a bumble bee stamp on the lid. The sweet honey for these favors was sourced from bees kept on Justin’s parents’ ranch in Okeechobee, Florida.

I wanted to find a special way to honor my late father’s spirit on this important day and I found a sweet way to do so.  My parents were high school sweethearts and would celebrate my father’s high school basketball game wins at the Sweet Shop in Hicksville, NY in the early 1970′s.  Still operating today, with not much changed, I decided to forgo a traditional wedding cake and fashioned a dessert table as a re-creation of the Sweet Shop. I displayed framed menus from the original Sweet Shop and the red and white table runner was reminiscent of the red and white awning on the store front.  Our friend Jessica, a talented graphic designer, created a replica of the neon Sweet Shop sign. Guests indulged in all of the traditional desserts found at a vintage ice cream shop and were invited to make their own ice cream sundaes, root beer floats and treat themselves to delicious cookies and brownies. Justin even created Sweet Shop stickers for the ice cream cups!

Congrats to Jolene & Justin and many thanks to Nicole for sending this beauty of a wedding my way!  Be sure to check out the gallery for even more.
