{Real Wedding} Suani & Luke: DIY-Meets-Art-Deco Lavender Wedding in New Zealand

Are you sitting down?  Because this is one of those weddings where you really need to be sitting down to handle the gorgeousness that is going to be coming at your eyeballs.  The bride wore not one, but TWO fabulous gowns – and one is in the prettiest shade of lavender (or is it lilac?).  Either way, it is ridiculous.  And all of the pretty DIY that she did to make the wedding personal makes it very Oh Lovely Day.  I sort of want to live in this New Zealand wedding, post #4 of travel week.  And I love this little snippet from the bride about the proposal:

Luke and I met in New Zealand five years ago. Whilst living in London, we took a trip to Sri Lanka where Luke proposed on the beach at the Mt Lavinia Hotel, where my parents had been married some 30 years before.

In London, I started the hunt for my wedding dress. I found ‘the one’ at the Vintage Emporium in Brick Lane, a gorgeous silk satin 40s number that fit like a dream. Whilst there, I also fell in love with a romantic 30s lace gown that I decided to wear to the reception.  The dresses really influenced the vision for our wedding and I started thinking about an art deco theme.

We wanted a small intimate event (so an art deco ballroom was out) and a location that would showcase the beauty of New Zealand for Luke’s family and friends, who would be making the long trip over from the UK. We found just what we were looking for in the Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant on idyllic Waiheke Island. The lavender bushes matched the lace gown to a tee and we loved the cosy Potager room with its beautiful surrounding kitchen gardens and stunning views out across the Hauraki Gulf. Something about the Potager room reminded me of an old French country estate and I liked the idea of combining slightly more rustic vintage elements with art deco glamour. We took pointers from the gardens and my gowns and chose lilac, lavender, ivory, green and blush pink as our colours.

My favourite memories from the wedding included walking (skipping!) down the aisle to Billie Holiday’s ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’ and saying our vows in front of our closest friends and family; walking into the Potager room and seeing the room set up and all the DIY touches in place; and dancing all night with my handsome new husband.

To achieve a really warm and personal feel, several aspects of the wedding were DIY – from the hand stamped save the dates, to the programs, the sugared almond favours, the fabric seating chart, embroidered table numbers, the cake topper and the metres of bunting I made to decorate the room – hard work at times, but so worth it in the end. I gleaned a lot of DIY inspiration from the blogosphere and would regularly search wedding magazines for inspiration and DIY instruction. In the lead up to the wedding we bought a lovely old sewing table, to sign our license on, a 30s Imperial typewriter for our guest book and a working gramophone along with selection of records our guests could play.

We were also lucky to find some amazing vendors. The customised wedding invitations were from Hello Tenfold (via Etsy). Vicki at Wildflower did an incredible job of decorating the Potager room and the ceremony area with sweet, nostalgic bunches of dahlias, lisainthus, tweedia, and garden roses, tea lights and vintage vases. We danced the night away to a live jazz band, and had a dessert table set up for guests where our delicious mango curd and vanilla wedding cake was served alongside other sweet treats on gorgeous vintage crockery. The whole day was perfectly captured by the lovely Jo Wickham, with her warm, light filled romantic reportage photography.

I think you already know how obsessed I am with the gowns, but add the color palette and all that DIY, plus those fab florals (I just LOVE dahlias!) and this wedding is pretty close to perfect in my book.  Isn’t Suani the most beaming and beautiful bride?

{Real Wedding} Jordi & Andrew: Rustic + DIY Georgia Farm Wedding

This farm wedding is pure DIY.  As in, everything you see.  And the bride did this from afar, as this was basically a destination wedding for the couple, as well as most of the guests.  Impressive, right?

The bride’s advice for planning couples?  Don’t ask for an opinion unless you really need one, because you’ll get more opinions than you could ever need.  Or want.

{Real Wedding} Katie & Wes: Cheery DIY Lakeside Chicago Wedding

There are a few places where I’ve lived or traveled that hold a special place in my heart, and Chicago tops them all.  It is just the best city and I miss it all the time.  Yeah the weather sucks 65% of the time, but on those days when the weather is good, there is no place like it.  So when this wedding came my way, it was like going home (my second home) for a little bit.  I’m so excited to share it with you today!  It just makes me happy.

    From the bride:
We stuck true to both of our personalities and worked to find a combination of playful and stylish, from the food to the decor to little details of the ceremony and celebration. We opted for cheesecakes instead of traditional wedding cake and had food that reflected Wes’ North Carolina roots. My dress and shoes were really reflective of my personality – the shorter length keeping things playful and a little edgy.

Before arriving at the wedding, my bridesmaids and I took pictures downtown. We felt almost famous, standing in the middle of the street all decked out. People were honking and waving and pre-celebrating with us for a second, and it was a great way to get excited for the hours to come.
Wes’s favorite thing about Chicago is the lake, so when we found this beautiful park and gorgeous building sitting on a peninsula right on the lake, we couldn’t say no. The water and city skyline made for an awesome view for guests and an incredible backdrop to our vows.
My bridesmaids and I did all of the flowers on our own. It added a little bit of stress the day before the wedding, but it was totally worth it. We saved a ton of money, and it was actually a lot of fun making the bouquets and boutonnieres. They felt really special.
We really wanted to walk down the aisle to something special and different, and we opted for the acoustic version of “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service. It made for the most beautiful feeling and was perfect for the lakefront setting.
Our first dance was to the acoustic version of “Beloved One” by Ben Harper. In the first few weeks of getting to know each other, I made Wes a CD of some of my favorite songs, and that song was one of them.

One of my favorite moments of the day was about twenty minutes before I walked down the aisle. My bridesmaids and I were hiding out in a back room, looking out the window at everything all set up, seeing guests begin to arrive, and of course, spying on Wes as he checked things out and talked to a few people. It was really exciting to see him. He looked amazing, and I almost started crying and ruined my makeup.
Ah, I just love this wedding!  From the DIY florals (seriously, what an incredible job!), to the lakeside setting…le sigh.  And the personal touches that this couple incorporated to make their wedding them were perfect.  I’m also really loving the citrus touches in the centerpieces and with the favors!  What’s your favorite detail?  Do tell :)

{Real Wedding} Danielle & Aaron: Charming Backyard DIY Wedding

Today I’ve got another sweet wedding to share with you today from Jennifer Roper.  You might remember this gorgeous rustic Ojai wedding of hers I featured a few weeks back, and her images are all over this blog since she also shot my wedding!  Well, today a charming backyard wedding with lots of personal DIY details, and a lovely pastel color palette.  Feast your eyes!

Now a little from Danielle on how they used DIY and personalization to make their wedding “them”:

The first thing my husband and I did- before any planning began- was ask ourselves, in one or two words, what we wanted our friends and family to experience for that day. We decided we wanted people to have the experience of love and laughter.

My husband is a writer and we both love the power of language and poetry. We thought it would be fun to incorporate that into our wedding.  We made a list of some of our favorite words and phrases that pertain to love and family. As people walked through the space we wanted their eyes to catch on a word “smitten” or a phrase “my one and only…”. We didn’t want to go over the top with it- but we wanted it to be a part of the atmosphere and decor. I went to Anawalt and asked for the discarded wood pieces and my friend and I painted dozens of signs with the words and phrases on them. We hung signs in trees and leaned them against rocks in the garden. We used our favorite words to distinguish the tables. The table that we shared with our parents was “kindred”.

In keeping with the word theme, I had a vision of people driving up to the house and the first word they would see is LOVE in big letters hanging across the top of the house. My girlfriend, a great seamstress, helped me sew each letter on a separate piece of cloth material. We hung each piece side by side like a clothing line. Because I love the rustic, homemade, vintage look- it all fit in beautifully.
One of my favorite last minute details? We were originally only going to have beer and wine and at the last minute our friend was able to get us several cases of tequila for free. Since my husbands favorite drink is a margarita it was perfect! We were just going to have regular margarita’s until my mom (4 days before the wedding) suggested bringing some prickly pear syrup from Tucson (my hometown). We ended up having a signature drink! “The Weekstrong Prickly Pear Margarita”. Weekstrong is our last names combined. The drink ended up being a bright pink color and a huge hit during cocktail hour!

This wedding was definitely a community effort. We had tons of help from family and friends. This started out as a necessity because we were on such a budget- but it ended up being such a blessing and really one of the most wonderful things about the whole process. The day was more magical than my husband and I could have imagined. We were shocked at how beautifully it all came together. It was a true collaboration. And in the end, people said they really got “our hearts”. Oh, and the love and laughter abounded!

I just love that!  It really shows you how the DIY and personal details are what often makes your day so magical, because your guests all see and feel “you” and your love in every detail.  And you feel it too, as well as the love of your friends and family.  This is more imporant than anything you can plan or buy for your wedding, don’t you think?  So, what’s your favorite part?  The pastel bridesmaids dresses, the sweet signs, the adorable flower girls?  I love all of the above!

{Real Wedding} Vanessa & Scott: California Rustic Garden Wedding

This wedding has a dreamy fairy tale feeling to it.  Maybe it is the pretty pink & peach details, or maybe it is the fabulous photos by Jen Disney, or maybe it is the gorgeous bride…I mean these bridal shots are like model magazine worthy.  Beautiful!

I love so many things about this sweet wedding: her shoes, the preserves favors/escort cards duo (great idea, btw to kill two birds with one stone!), and that outdoor photobooth is so unique!  Here are a few details from Vanessa:
Maravilla Gardens was a magical place to have our wedding. We had a lot of help from our friends and family during the planning process which helped make our day so intimate and personal.  Family flew in from out of state to join us and the ceremony was performed by my Uncle, both of which helped make it feel like not only were Scott and I coming together, but our families were as well.
Our parents contributed so much time and energy helping with the homemade jams, the slide show of Scott and I, and the mason jar votives, and so much more.  Everywhere I turned there were things that made me smile! Scott and I love each other, our family & friends, the outdoors, lace (well maybe that is just me) and a good party! It was these things that we love which helped guide us in planning our wedding day.  We couldn’t have dreamed up a more perfect day.  And to top it all off, SPARKLERS! It was magical from start to finish.

At the end of the day, you should feel exactly like Vanessa felt – that everywhere you look you see the people and things you love all around at your wedding and that your day felt like magic.  You won’t get that if you don’t have the kind of wedding that YOU want.  You know, like in The Notebook where Ryan Gosling is all intense and asking Rachel McAdams “What do you want? Not what I want, not what he wants, not what your parents want…What do YOU want?” (yes, I have that movie memorized!) Well, that’s how I think you should plan your wedding.  You should think of your guests’ comfort, you should consider what is important to your parents, you should accomodate people as best you can, but you should DO what YOU want.  If you want a small wedding, or a black wedding gown, or pies instead of cake, or no kids at your wedding: whatever it is, you should do what you want.  And now, because I brought him up, I’ll leave you with a little tid bit from the most practical (and hottest) wedding advice giver:

How much do you love this wedding?  Do you agree that you should ultimately do what YOU want when planning your wedding?  Is Ryan Gosling your go-to for wedding advice?  He should be!  (Check out my Pinterest board of Ryan Gosling wedding advice!)  Chime in!
