Rustic Glam Wedding: Katee & Steve

rustic glam wedding | casey connell photography & By Emily B eventsWhen Gatsby meets Upstate New York, you know you’re in for a treat. And that’s exactly what today’s wedding is: the perfect blend of rustic and glam. The barn venue mixed with the silver sequin linens; the wheat + feather details combined with black and white stripey straws; the outdoor autumn setting contrasted with the glamorous bridal attire and groom’s tuxedo – like I said, the perfect blend of rustic and glam.  And absolute perfection.  Oh, and the couple has the sweetest story of how they met, which I’m sharing from the groom’s perspective.  It’s totally worth the read!

rustic glam wedding | casey connell photography & By Emily B events rustic glam wedding | casey connell photography & By Emily B events Advice for couples planning now?  Be confident in your ideas and your vision. Everyone is going to have an opinion, but stick to what makes YOU happy and excited. Find a team of vendors that you mesh with. Of course you have to admire their work, but when you connect with the people you are working with, everything seems to effortlessly fall into place. I feel like our wedding day was completely stress free and I had such a blast, I didn’t have a worry in the world because we had such an AMAZING group of people we were working with.

We collected small river stones and had them displayed by the ceremony entrance. Each guest was asked to take a ‘Blessing Stone’ with them to their seat, during the ceremony our officiant asked that each guest silently add their own blessings to these stones. Just as stones provide a strong foundation upon which to build, those Blessing Stones are now displayed in our house, reminding us each day of the love of our family and friends, our love for each other.

This song holds such special meaning to us, especially since I played it on our second date. It’s such a simple and beautifully written song-it gives me chills every time I hear it. The lyrics couldn’t be more fitting for our story.

We decided to run with that idea for favors, letting our guests pick and chose which one’s they wanted. We found this really great shop on etsy where you can customize the packaging and pick from an assortment of flavors. They were a hit! Guests raved about the fair trade coffee we chose.

Our vision was rustic simplicity meets classy city chic. We both really love the style and grace of the 1920′s/30′s and wanted our day to capture that feel of vintage charm as well. When we became engaged we knew that we wanted to create a wedding that was personal and we wanted to make sure our guests felt special and included. Our day felt very intimate and sacred. Oak Hill, the estate where we held our wedding, is such a magical place in itself, it was amazing getting to share it with those we hold closest to our hearts. It was a day filled with love and gratitude.

Somewhere in our relationship, we began saying, ‘Forever, For Always, and No Matter What’. I had this printed on the top of our wedding programs, it’s almost become our little motto. Steve even wrote it into his vows. I would say that what made my wedding me was all the little unique details and special touches throughout the day. I put a lot of thought, time and effort into these details and it fills my heart to know they did not go unnoticed.

Do you see why I love this wedding so much?  And there’s more!  The wedding trailer by Clark + Walker Studio had me in tears last night when I watched it again while putting the finishing touches on today’s feature.  And Katee & Steve have the sweetest love story.  I don’t usually publish this much writing from the couple, but I just had to share it, so if you want to read it you can get his and her versions below.  And be sure to check out the gallery for even more rustic glam goodness.  Congrats Katee & Steve on a gorgeous wedding and a beautiful love story.

Story of how the couple met as told by Steve:

We were literally just down the road and around the corner from each other for around 12 years on and off. Katee was born and raised on a picturesque country road in Kinderhook, NY overlooking the rolling farm hills of Columbia County that I have now come to know and love. I grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where I fell asleep staring at the tip of the Empire State Building and the Citicorp building.

After 35 years of working hard in the city, my parents finally decided to get back to their country roots and ended up buying a beautiful piece of land right on that picturesque country road I was telling you about earlier, which happened to be right next door to Katee’s parents.

Over the next years as my parents planned and built their house, I started finding myself on their land more and more to the point where I was coming up to Kinderhook every chance I got. I also met and learned to like Katee’s parents as well as her brother, all the while never even knowing that she existed. Finally a day came when Katee met my parents and I first learned that there was a fourth member to the Austin family. I’ll never forget my fathers first words to me about her, “you should meet this Katee girl, I think you’d really like her.” The seed was planted. Little did I know that across the street Katee’s mother had also planted a seed with her, saying something along the lines of, “you really need to meet that Scoblic boy.”

I’ll never forget the night we first met because I was attempting to cook Katee dinner and had asked her to simply bring herself and some ice. When the door opened, man, she was gorgeous!!!  As she tells it, a smile came across my face from ear to ear that she’ll never forget. When we went to exchange the bag of ice, as if some energy hit us, or maybe because we just couldn’t take our eyes off of each other,  the bag of ice hit the floor and exploded in every direction. We both laughed, and smiled, and began to get to know one another.

We ate and talked, and talked some more. We drove down to my favorite spot on the property that overlooks rolling meadows and opens up to a great view of the night-time sky. We saw two shooting stars and talked until 2am in the morning, something magical was in the air–Something bigger than us had brought us together. A year later, I would bring Katee back to that exact same spot to propose…

(GAH! And I’m crying again.  I’m such a sucker for love.)

{Real Wedding} Erin & Michael: Vintage Fall Wedding With A Dramatic Edge

vintage Vegas wedding with gorgeous florals | Gaby J PhotographyThis wedding captured my attention with the dramatic and unique bouquet in deep shades and accented with a single feather. The rest of the florals are equally fabulous and perfect for a fall wedding. And the best part? They were DIY! I love how budget-friendly this wedding is, yet the florals make it look the opposite.  I still can’t believe those were all DIY – so well done!  Loving the bride’s bouquet and that ceremony arch so much, aren’t you?

{Styled Shoot} Vintage World Travel Wedding

old world travel wedding shootI love vintage, I love travel, and I love weddings.  So today’s styled shoot sent to me by Tiffany Walsh with Wedding 101 Nashville is pretty much a no brainer.  I’m a big fan of vintage globes and maps, so the map paper airplanes, the maps decoupaged onto the plates, and the globe altar decor are hitting my sweet spot.  Here’s a little about the shoot concept from Tiffany:

Since this couple is planning to travel all over Europe on their honeymoon, we gave them a glimpse of what their day could look like with our Old World Travel theme at Natchez Hills Vineyard’s beautiful estate, just south of Nashville in Hampshire, TN. With the help of a slew of vintage suitcases, globes, old books, cameras, and map paper airplanes, the vineyard was transported back in time for the celebration for Katie & Doug’s special unity. The warm Tennessee sun gave a romantic glow to the couple strolling and embracing among the grapevines, lounging on a Victorian sofa, and goofing off in the vintage photobooth – travel gnomes and all! Our favorite moment was a special twist on the traditional unity candle: the bride and groom placed a bottle of wine, two glasses and notes written to one another into a custom-made wooden box and nailed it shut – only to be opened on their ten year wedding anniversary. Helen Keller says, “Life is either a great adventure or nothing.” After this shoot, Katie and Doug are well on their way to a beautiful wedding day and a honeymoon abroad that will the beginning of many great adventures in their lives.

{Real Wedding} Nathalie & JJ: Modern & Quirky DIY Wedding at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum

modern natural history museum wedding | jennifer roper There is so much I love about today’s incredibly unique wedding.  It’s the perfect blend of quirky and elegant: the venue, the bride’s gorgeous emerald gown, the personality infused in every detail.  But what I love most are the bride’s own words about how the couple made their day THEM.

J.J.’s family is Quaker, and we borrowed a couple Quaker traditions while planning our ceremony. What that came down to was, no processional, no recessional, and, most importantly, no officiant. Instead, we began with a twenty-minute period of unprogrammed silence, during which friends and family were encouraged to offer thoughts and stories and advice. In hindsight, that decision was the single best one we made during the planning process. J.J. and I are usually bundles of nervous energy and queasy self-consciousness, but during those twenty minutes, as we listened to our uncles and aunts and friends and brothers-in-law speak, we felt glowingly happy. We felt loved and grateful and at peace. Far and away, the day’s high point.

That YES moment brides get when they’ve found the perfect dress? We felt it walking through L.A. County’s Natural History Museum. Its dark, wood-paneled walls reminded us of an Edwardian parlor—but then, in between those wooden panels were windows overlooking impossible vistas: deserts, mountains, rain forests. The contrast felt as magical and as unlikely as a wardrobe opening onto Narnia. In college and since then, J.J. and I have both had a taste for weird, teetering on unnerving, reading topics: anatomical theater, fake museums, psychoanalytic theories of puppetry… The Natural History Museum felt just wrong enough to be right. Inside its walls, dead animals looked alive; the indoors become outdoors and the outdoors became indoors again.  Eventually, that line of thought—that interest in the museum’s trickery and inversions—led us to our theme: turn-of-the-century entertainment, with an emphasis on optical toys and visual illusions.

My advice for planning brides?  If you’re a) someone who cries easily, and b) someone who gets puffy-faced or vaguely crazy-looking after crying, DO NOT schedule your “cute couple photos” directly after your ceremony. I cried before, during, and after my vows, and the result of all that love was not—as one might hope—a beaming, beautiful face, but, instead, a beaming, swollen one. So, to brides like me: keep that in mind when devising your day-of schedule!

There are so many wonderful touches and interesting details to this wedding that I’ve added a gallery of photos so you can see even more and I asked the bride to share about all of her personal DIY touches below.  You can tell so much thought, effort, and love was put into every aspect of this wedding and Jennifer Roper captured it perfectly.  It’s such a breath of fresh air from the typical “DIY wedding” don’t you think?

    More from the bride, Nathalie:

Our theme was vintage entertainment, and, given our venue, we put a special emphasis on turn-of-the-century optical toys and visual illusions. Most of our DIY projects touched on that theme in some way. They included:

-save the dates, which we modeled on the thaumatrope, a popular 19th century parlor toy. Spin the disc, and the images on both sides merge; a bird and a cage, for example, become a caged bird. For our version, we drew simple traffic-sign-ish silhouettes decked out in vintage garb. A man (J.J.) stands on one side, and a woman (me) stands on the other. Spin the disc, and the figures are suddenly next to each other, like they’re meeting at the altar. The text from each side combines to invite guests to “join us” on 6/16/2012.

-invites, which we based on flip books like these, which were in turn inspired by the old parlor game, “exquisite corpse” (also known as “picture consequences”). For our version, I drew six characters to mix and match: a kangaroo and an onyx; a cheetah and a llama; and J.J. and me. It was definitely an unusual invite (the guy at the copy shop couldn’t stop shaking his head at us), but, hey: if you’re getting married at a Natural History Museum, why not do something different?

-escort cards, which used illustrations from a 1859 book on shadow puppetry by Henry Bursill. While the book’s in the public domain, the best reproductions I could find of it were high-res digital scans on Circus Board’s etsy store. I colored in the shadows using Photoshop, and designed the cards with PageMaker. We used the French names for animals because 1) my father’s family is French, 2) J.J.’s father is a French literature professor, and 3) we’re a little pretentious.

-dioramas, which we assembled with figurines and props from peoplescale.com. I wanted to riff off the museum’s nature dioramas with little human scenes that were also behind glass.

-zoetropes, which we used as cocktail table centerpieces. Some were made by our friend Danny; others were purchased from Ancient Optics on ebay. Inside the largest zoetrope, we placed a hand-drawn animation strip of me and J.J. dancing.

-fake family photos: J.J. and I both have a thing for anthropomorphic animals, and we couldn’t resist these vintage-styled prints from etsy’s GrandOleBestiary. We displayed them on our gift table, just like some couples display family photos. Consider them our spiritual, if not biological, forerunners.

-ferret display: J.J. proposed to me with a ferret puppet (long story). For our wedding’s cocktail hour, we put the puppet in a museum-provided display case, along with a placard explaining the puppet’s importance. Apparently, though, the placard got lost along the way, and the kids at the party decided the ferret was real—and very scary. Only Ilan, the youngest, was brave enough to investigate.

-reception masks: J.J. and I made our grand entrance in custom-made paper masks by Phillip Valdez. We also flanked the entrance to our reception hall with signs asking guests to wear camouflage (“out of respect” for the native wildlife). Next to each sign, we put out a spread of colorful paper masks (of owls, raccoons, and foxes). Our younger guests were also greeted with furry-eared headbands at their seats.

-shuffleboard: We lured several of J.J.’s friends across the country with the promise of shuffleboard at our reception. We bought a used indoor court off eBay, and spent several days writing the game’s rules in prose so simple, even drunk partygoers should have been able to follow it. In the end, though, none of our friends got a chance to play. The court was immediately taken over by kids, who played throughout the night—and followed no rules but their own.
